Step One: Clean my Desk

So before I show you the current state of my writing area, let’s recap…

  • I’m two weeks into my new job
  • I just moved
  • I’ve been away all summer.

Have I mentioned that I just moved? Okay I’m totally stalling. Here’s what my writing desk looks like right now…

I got the desk for $40 on Craigslist. It’s big with lots of surface space, which is exactly what I wanted. Since it’s currently a mess, I decided step one was organizing and clearing a path. My whole apartment is a work in progress, and I’ve definitely got big plans for my writing area. Here’s my main writing desk inspiration…

So that’s the goal, but for now I’ll just settle for organized and clean!

So What Had Happened Was…

Yes this is the obligatory “I’m Back” blog post. I’ve been M.I.A. for a bit, but life has been both busy and kind of awesome! Since my last post in April one of the coolest things I’ve done is spend three months in Europe! I spent most of that time living in Spain which was amazing. I also got to visit my friend Claire who lives in the England. Here’s a brief glimpse…

All my fellow “Sherlock” lovers will recognize this doorway…

And the geeky girl hits just keep on coming. That’s right, I got to go to the Warner Brother’s Harry Potter studio tour in London. It was amazing!

It was an amazing summer to say the least! I got back to the states in August and immediately interviewed for a job I’d been trying to get before I left for the summer. The good news is I got it! So in September I started working again full time. And to top it all off with a cherry I’ve also moved within the last few weeks.

So I’ve been kinda busy. And because of that there’s been little to no editing. The thing about my book is that even when I’m not working on it, I still think about it pretty much everyday. My iPhone voice memo app is full of ideas for dialogue and scene fixes. This book just won’t let me go, and I’m kind of grateful for that.

Now that my life is back in a normal rhythm, the editing shall commence…

Who You Calling Indecisive?!

So today while I was editing, I had an a-ha moment.

Since I’ve started editing my first draft, there are times that I feel like an indecisive bride trying to choose a cake flavor. Today I realized that I have a ton of little decisions about my project that I need to just sit down and figure out. Things like the name of the town that my MC lives in . Seems simple right? That one decision alone has given me many sleepless nights and almost driven me to drink!

The thing I’m learning, is that those little things can add up. And for me that’s happening because I’ve been reluctant to make final decisions. Why is that? I think it’s because for the longest time I was afraid of that finality. What if I make the wrong decision? What if I regret my decision? You’d think I was trying to defuse a bomb instead of just choosing a town name!

Today I finally had enough. I decided I was going to sit down, gather all my notes and make some decisions. And you know what? I did it. And nothing blew up.

More and more I’m finding that the key to me finally finishing my edit, is me coming face to face with my fears and dealing with them.

One at a time…
